What is the Best Desktop App for Twitter?

The other day I was checking out my tweets when I began to notice that even though most of them looked the same, if you really paid attention you could tell there were some small differences, so I started to take just a little closer look to see why...

Well, I expected there would be a few to choose from, but I had no idea just how many! Being a good researcher I went to google and typed in "Twitter applications"...WHOA! Too much info for what I was looking for! Who knew there could be so many applications dedicated to Twitter!? It was not a total waste of time because I found one app I liked, POKKI, which is a toolbar for...other apps!

Next I typed in "Twitter Desktop Applications" and then spent the next 8 hours downloading (the ones I could) and trying to compare my options, as well as reading up on articles like Mashable to see what I was looking at. The Requirements were pretty simple...1) It had to be F'ree (because I am cheap) or at least free to try. I never buy anything before I can test drive it! and 2) Even a simpleton like myself had to be able to figure it out in a reasonable amount of time. After spending most of the night checking things out I was able to put together a list of sorts...much of which is based on my reactions to the Mashable and other reports when available as well as my "test drive" when possible. Some of these are actually pretty old in today's terms with 2009 being the average. There are a few I tried which are too new to be reviewed so I will list them so you can check them out or report on them if you have experience.

To be fair I am not going to comment on these apps, I am not here to promote any specific product. I am going to break them down as some of the articles did, and that was by usage grouping. There are several that were not in every review so it would be hard to tell what they can do without actually trying them out. I am far from a Twitterholic but side by side (so to speak) I could get an idea what they were capable of. There is quite a variety of choices so what might fit my needs might not work for you. If I missed one that you use then let me know and I will update the list.

I am sure that I missed some, some of the reviews I read go back to 2008! It is possible that a few MAC products are not listed as such because a few did not say, so I put them with the PC group...they may no longer exist! TwitBot is out for service until...? so I did not list it. Both Digsby and Hello.txt receive high ratings even though they are not specifically a twitter app so I listed them separately. If you know of others I did not list just leave a comment and I will add them in future issues! Since I could not make up my mind I decided for your feedback, and now have a bunch of apps listed on my desktop!
